Kilimanjaro Buses Suspended for Overcharging and Failure to Provide Receipts

The Director-General of the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (#LATRA), Habibu Suluo, has ordered the suspension of all buses operated by the Kilimanjaro Express Company from providing services starting January 8, 2024. This action is due to the company violating licensing conditions, including the failure to issue electronic tickets and overcharging passengers, until necessary improvements are made.

Speaking after a surprise inspection at the Magufuli Bus Terminal and Shekilango offices, Suluo stated, “Today, we seized a bus from this company (Dar-Moshi-Arusha) for overcharging passengers. Each passenger was charged a different fare. We asked them to refund the passengers, and they agreed. However, shortly after leaving their offices, they refused to refund, saying it requires approval from their boss.”

He added, “This is not an isolated incident; they have been doing this repeatedly, despite numerous warnings from us. If they believe paying fines is normal for them, we cannot tolerate it.”

Conclusion:

The directive to suspend Kilimanjaro Express buses emphasizes the importance of compliance with laws and licensing conditions, with a focus on delivering quality services to passengers. LATRA is prioritizing adherence to regulations over imposing fines, emphasizing the need for the company to rectify its practices for a seamless resumption of services.
