About the Job:

The Livelihoods Program Lead, reporting to the Head of Programs, is a strategic thinker responsible for spearheading civil society engagement in consumer protection, inclusive and sustainable trade practices, and integrating gender expertise into organizational programming. This role involves managing livelihood projects, demonstrating leadership, and comprehensive project management skills while ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Inclusive Trade:

  • Conduct research and mapping exercises to identify opportunities and challenges for inclusive trade practices, particularly focusing on marginalized groups like women, youth, and people with disabilities (PWDs).
  • Develop and deliver targeted training programs on sustainable trading, cross-border trade, and business literacy tailored to the needs of marginalized groups.
  • Design and implement grant programs to support inclusive trade ventures, emphasizing climate-smart approaches.
  • Promote the adoption of tools and technologies, including digital platforms, to enhance market access for marginalized groups.

Consumer Protection:

  • Lead advocacy initiatives to strengthen regulatory frameworks for consumer protection, engaging policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Design and implement capacity-building programs for National Consumer Advocacy Council (NCAC) and other relevant committees.
  • Collaborate with regional organizations to promote harmonized consumer protection measures across East Africa.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the in-house gender and climate change expert, enabling staff and partners to integrate gender-inclusive and climate-smart approaches into projects.
  • Provide training and capacity-building programs for staff and partners on climate-smart practices and advocacy.
  • Forge strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in the climate action space, including government agencies and environmental NGOs.
  • Collaborate with the monitoring, learning, and communication unit to document lessons learned and articulate program relevance.
  • Support the development of proposals and concept notes addressing the intersection of climate change, social inclusion, and gender responsiveness.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in international trade, climate change, economics, development studies, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 7 years of project management experience, with a focus on trade-related programs or climate action initiatives.
  • Proficiency in conducting research, policy analysis, and advocacy campaigns related to trade and climate change.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive development strategies and empowerment of marginalized groups.
  • Proven track record in proposal writing and donor engagement.
